Cool Street And Beach Wear That Aims To Inprove The Environmnet

By Jacob Symes

The fashion industry is a tricky one to break into for any businessman. The skateboard wear industry is even tougher than most. Riders of all persuasions are some of the trickiest shoppers out there. The first thing you have to have if you are going to attempt to sell to board sports enthusiasts is credibility. If you do not ride yourself, they won't want to know you. The second thing you need is style. There are loads of brands out there that posses both credibility and style, a couple of these names that pop to mind are Volcom, Billabong, Matix, DVS and Rebel 8.

In this article Im going to concentrate on where Matix in particular has come from as they are home grown from the roots up with a wicked story because the creators of this brand lived and breathed the industry way before they got involved in this side of it.

Tim Gavin and Daewon Song are the driver behind Matix. This fact alone immediately gave their company street credibility withing in the skateboarding community when they set up it in 1998. Both Tim and Daewon were and still are today pro skateboarders who became tired of shredding their clothes each time they pushed their limits on their skateboards. They made a decision to be proactive about it and made their own line of clothing for skaters.

When they started the business, the guys knew what they wanted: Nice looking, long lasting skate wear that also had a good cause and gave something back. That is exactly what they did. As their company grew, so did their scope. Now Matix makes attire and other gear for surfers and snow boarders, too. Matix have taken on new talent like Marc Johnson and Gabe Kling. These men have pushed the brand to fresh heights without losing the functional integrity of the initial vision.

A cool thing that this label does like a number of the other big names out there in the snowboard world is cross the standard limits as they are absolutely committed to the environment and making the planet a cleaner and greener place. That is the reason why when you aquire fresh pair of their boardshorts, it includes a environmental friendly trash bag. They desire every single pair of board shorts to function as a memory jogger that it's our collective responsibility to clean up the planet.

That was a bold move and one that could plainly have backfired with disgruntled youth, but like other brands such as Rip Curl, Billabong and Hurley who have this environmental philosophy they didn't think twice and simply did not care. They did it because they cared and wished to use their influence in a good way. It's a true testament to the power of integrity that they were able to get their message across. What the labels who take this approach are really trying to say is this, if every single person did their bit, even something as petit as picking up one piece of rubbish at your favourite beach it can make a huge difference on the grand scheme of things.
