Shih Tzu - This Is For You

By Rebecca Stevenson

Many people prefer smaller breed dogs and for good reasons. One such preferred breed is the Shih Tzu. Owning this breed will allow you to have beauty and punch in one small dog. The history behind Shihtzus goes way back to to ancient times.

This dog has its origins in Tibet but is more treasured in china. In fact, the Chinese consider it to be a prized companion because it is not only active but also affectionate, confident, courageous, playful and happy. This is despite having that lush and double hair coat that is long. These features of the dog makes training quite manageable as this pet is able to capture much of what is required within a short period of time. Note that it is this training that will transform your pet to a wonderful companion.

The care and attention you provide these dogs is always returned to you. These are also good traits for a dog that will be part of the family with children. Choosing this breed means you will have dog capable of being easily trained. The well trained dog is also the well behaved dog.

Unlike many other pets, this dog loves being indoors and is easy to get along with all members of the family including children. This is because they are also alert, keen, self assured and outgoing. As such, they are also considered to be one of the best watchdogs you can ever have. Unfortunately, these dogs have trouble having to stay alone for a long time because they expect to be spoilt at any given time.

Caring for the Shih Tzu is not a difficult task even though you must take note of the fact that these dogs need a lot of grooming owing to their long hair. As such you must be prepared to set aside some time to brush it everyday.

Shih Tzu fare better with owners that have plenty of time for play time and time just to be together. Their personality is one that does not do well for owners that will be gone to work all day. You should make sure to have plenty of home time with this kind of dog. You should know that by spending a great deal of time with your dog, you can expect better results in calmness and good behavior.

Unfortunately, these dogs are prone to kidney disease as well as slipping kneecaps. They also snore and this is something you need to consider when creating a sleeping space for them in the home.

Although house training a Shih Tzu may not be an easy task owing to the fact that this breed is stubborn, it can absolutely be done. The crate method of training is recommended. You must keep in mind that these dogs will often fail to respond to punishment or any form of harshness hence to ensure that they become obedient ensure that the training is motivational and low key.

Consistency in house training includes you taking your dog out about the same times every day. This is a time for potty training, but it should also include playing and exercise as well. The time you spend with this kind of dog will mean you making a true and loyal friend.
