Using Backdrops At Photography Studios

By Anne Farrell

Employing the use of backdrops at photography sessions is a good way of adding some panache to an otherwise boring photography studio backdrop. Backdrops also add a feel of sophistication and an impression of professionalism to photographs as well as aesthetically improve the overall quality of the photo. Backdrops can also offer the illusion that the subject is standing in front of an actual scene and not in front of a mere fabric.

Whether you are shooting a portrait photo or a sci-fi one, using a photography background can dramatically change the ambiance of a photograph. Any set artist or photographer can put a subject anywhere he likes whether fronting the Leaning Tower of Pisa with merely the use of a great backdrop. Here are some photography backdrops that any amateur or professional photography studio operator can use:

1. Paper. Some studios make use of plain or printed paper which can be bought by bundles or by the yard at hardware stores. The problem with paper, even though readily available, is that it creases and tears easily as well. It is incredibly cheap though and photography as well as videography studios can make do with it for DIY sets and productions.

2. Muslin Backdrops. Muslin fabric has been used for hundreds of years for its versatility. It is a favorite among theatre set designers and photographers as the fabric can be easily painted and draped. When paint is used on muslin, a wavy, flowing look is produced making the background more pure and realistic. It is also an outstanding fabric for video productions especially those that apply the chroma-key method.

3. Faux Wood Floorings. Ever thought about why the set of magazine photographs all have fantastic floors? Some sets really have impressive floors while others don't. So what does the set artist or photographer do about it? They set up faux wood floors on the set of course. Interestingly, the floors could also be used as a wall background to achieve a vintage parlour interior look for the photo.
