Think You're A Poker Fish Or Shark At The Table?

By Clarence Rutkin

When it comes time to play it pays to be the top predator at the table. If you get asked, are you a poker fish or shark, then you are not talking with your game. The sharks feed while the fish get devoured in the murky red waters of the poker world. Be a big one and eat the little guys with the right attitude and a little knowledge.

Luck and skill are both factors in making a mark at the poker table. Drawing poorly will make anyone want to weep. However the real players will make any hand a good one. Bluffing and raising like the cards are there can change the game if you do it right. Taking the time to read the opponents and choosing who and when to strike will save the bank and win the day.

Sharks need to be cold and calculating. Showing emotion only when the game is done. The newbies tend to act and react to each card played showing signs of the hand. Tells as they are commonly known. It is a dead give away every time and then it becomes time for the real predators to feast. A relaxed attitude and a rigid appearance will keep you in your skin and give the you the edge.

A good way to know the level of skill you have attained is to keep constantly trying yourself against better and better competition. Only by playing in a bigger pond can the true champions emerge. Challenging experienced opponents will give an immediate answer to the question, but this can be an expensive way to find out how far you have come.

All levels of play take instincts to get over he hump. The edge the pros have over the newbies is in trusting those gut feelings. Sharks must not fail to act when there is blood in the water. Hesitating will cost a big pot to slip on by. Being unsure of oneself will also lead to failure. Get into a hand with determination and play it out with confidence. Win or lose it is how to make an impression.

The waters can appear calm at any moment in a big round of cards. Players will show no fear or hesitation if they know that they can hold themselves in there with anyone. It pays to know what your skill level has become. Diving into the game with blinders on will get you eaten up in seconds. Broke and beaten, and with nothing to show for it. Be prepared and play with confidence.

Having gained the knowledge that comes with a little study, and a lot of time with cards in your hands, will prove the best test of where you fit in. Once this is known, it is just a matter of putting in enough hands to reach the top. Winning can mean making a ton of money, but it doesn't come easy. Taking a few knocks will give anyone the experience to rise above and eat up the competition.
