Chicago Bears Sign On Matt Dodge

By Rebekah Alford

The regular punter for the Chicago Bears, Adam Podlesh, suffered a severe injury to his hip flexor. Matt Dodge has been signed on to replace him, after playing for the NY Giants in 2010. He was not offered a renewal. As a rookie, he averaged 44.8 yards per punt.

Looking at his stats, we see consistent records set as a rookie punter. In 2007, his record was for 80 punts of a total of 3,307 years, for an average of 41.7 yards. Again, in 2008, he averaged 43.9 yards a punt, setting a record with this and other things. He made the longest punt of 73 yards, the most yards (296), and kicked 20 punts inside the 20-yard line, setting records with each of those.

As a Freshman at Appalachian State, he started making records. He played in all twelve games. He punted 41 times for a total of 1,626 yards, averaging 39.7 yards per punt. He totaled 293 yards for seven punts. Three of those were inside the 20-yard line. He punted 55 yards two time during that year. He had 5,6 or 7 punts per game for most games. He had three games in which he punted six or more punts, and 229 yards.

At age 25, weighing in at 220 pounds, he is a top punter, setting many records. He has played since high school, playing in college as well. Though he was an excellent punter, setting many records, one mistake may have been his downfall. Since someone has to win and someone lose, maybe it won't have too much of a negative impact. He is a great punter. There are three parts to a football team. There is the offense, the defense, and the special team. The special team does the kicking, including punting.

After all his college playing he was ready for the NFL. He was picked in the seventh round, and did well. His miscalculation that didn't get the ball out of bounds turned the tide. He was not renewed, and is now a free agent. He has played some, but remains as a free agent. It remains to be seen what his new position might bring for him.

Tom Coughlin, coach for the giants, said his cutting Dodge and having to tell him was hardest thing he has ever done. Dodge took it well, Coughlin said. He indicated that he had seen a lot of maturing and growing in him during that season, and expects to see big things from him as a punter. Coughlin praised his strong legs.

Every player is exemplar, Coughlin says. Summer camp is a gathering of the very best. When having to draft, he says the decision is very hard. The players all expect the best, as they are encouraged to reach for the top. However, someone always has to be left out, even though they are very good.

There is not many times in life when a whole history of exceptional successes is overshadowed by one mistake of a few seconds. Though the history for Matt Dodge was superb, having records set in almost every game, and certainly every season, this one mistake has cost him dearly. It is hoped that he will make a comeback in spite of it.
