Mens Waistcoats - New Designs All Over The World

By Mark Richards

In simple terms, mens waistcoats are a sleeveless outfit that buttons up the front. It is worn over a shirt with pants or in a suit. Common waistcoats are embroidered, multicolored and some even have appliqu work. Modern waistcoats are typically plain, with a pinstripe or a subdued print in a few instances with a V-neck. The traditional waistcoat is seen with a few formal or evening wear.

The term itself is obtained from the cut of the coat which is made at waist level. In Canada, the United States plus some other places, the waistcoat is termed a vest. The term was derived to talk about the third type of a 3 piece suit to distinguish it from other kinds of waistcoats. As part of the suit, it is cut from an identical cloth as the coat and jeans.

It was during the Restoration that King Charles II made the waistcoat part of court dress. Early mention of the waistcoat is noted by Samuel Pepys in his dairy in the 17th century. Despite being a crucial part of formal wear for centuries, modern trends have turned the waistcoat into a more stylish, flexible garment. It is now even worn with that ultimate of informal attire, blue jeans. For that reason, inexpensive or "off the rack" versions of mens waistcoats can now be found at department stores, rather than needing to have one fitted at a tailor's shop.

Prior to wristwatches got into fashion, the waistcoat was the best dress to store a pocket watch. The wrist watch was kept in a small pocket on each side and then connected by a chain to the trouser waistband on the opposite side. Since the watch chain could often be seen, it became some fashion alone and remains to be linked to the waistcoat even now.

The mens waistcoat is gaining popularity in other parts of the world now as a side-effect of globalization. As clothing makers move their manufacturing to cheaper labor forces outside the West, the waistcoat is now spreading and being accepted by the populations of those countries as well. It is also traveling around the globe thanks to social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Nowadays, there are two kinds of mens waistcoats: Single Breasted and Double Breasted. The single breasted is known as day-wear and contains 4 to 6 buttons. An evening wear waistcoat is double breasted with only three buttons in general. Each style come in several colors to add Brown, Black, Grey and various other colors for formal wear and fancy-dress occasions. They are manufactured in fabrics from flannel and gabardine to Satin and Wool. Each style are designed for a straight bottom.

If worn only with a pair of trousers, many men now are opting for designer buttons to provide an extra bit of style. These buttons are generally plated in gold or silver or have a precious stone such as diamond or emerald worked into them.

There is one last kind of mens waistcoat. It is worn with Kurta pajamas and has a Nehru collar. These are generally made out of silk or satin with heavy embroidery. The inside is lined to cover the fabric.
