National Margarita Day - Frozen Margarita Recipe

By Harold Walker

Did you know that National Margarita Day is held on February 22 each year. This drink has become so popular, they decided to name a day after it. The margarita is enjoyed by millions of people on an annual basis, but do we know who invented the margarita ? We will try and find the answer to that question in this article.

There have been many that claim they invented this classic beverage, but in our research, we found no official inventor of a frozen margarita recipe, but the National Margarita Day lives on. One story says that in 1941 in a cantina named Hussong's, Don Carlos Orozco was experimenting with some new mixed drinks. He created a drink that had tequila, orange liqueur and lime. He also put salt around the rim of the glass it was served in.

That day, the daughter to a German ambassador named Margarita Henkel, walked into Hussong's and Don Carlos offered his new concoction to her. Don Carlos named his new drink the margarita because Margarita Henkel was the first to taste it.

Another story claims that a bartender named Willie from Mexico City created and named his drink in 1934 for his friend Marguerite Hemery. Still another story has Carlos Herrera creating his margarita in his Tijuana restaurant in 1938. He invented it for Marjorie King, who was allergic to all hard alcohol except tequila, but did not like the sour taste.

Yet another story is that Margarita Sames mixed up a margarita in 1948 for some house guests, one of which was Tommy Hilton, who put the drink on his bar menu at all of his hotels.

Whoever invented the frozen margarita recipe, it is the most popular drink containing tequila in the states, and deserving of National Margarita Day.

This classic drink comes in a frozen margarita recipe, or the classic concoction that is served over ice in a glass with a salted rim. There are many new flavor variations that people have experimented with since the first margaritas were created. Some new flavors are strawberry, pineapple, mango, pomegranate, raspberry and more.

And having national Margarita Day in February gives those living in colder climates a ray of hope that warmer days are ahead, where they can enjoy their favorite frozen margarita recipe and soak up the sunshine. Jimmy Buffet also made this popular beverage even more popular with his famous song about the drink.
